Sorry to nitpick, but the original C2N was for the Commodore PET. This
had an .156" edge connector as its cable plug, I think 6-way (or was it
It's 6 pins. I forge tthe order, but the signals are : +5V; Ground ;
Record date; Replay Date; Motor Power (switched by the computer); Sense
swtich (groudned when an operating key is pressed on the C2N
5?). I can't remember what connector the VIC and
C64 versions had. At
The saem. The C64, VIC 20 and all PETs can use the same tape drive. IIRC,
the Plus4 and C16 (?) used a 6 pin mini-DIN, with the same signals.
some point the shape was changed from the traditional
cassette deck to a
more rounded, stand alone version, but I think it went on being called
C2N, to the annoyance of us PET users.
What was a 1530? And wasn't a 1531 the version with the 6 pin Mini-DIN
(FWIW my first PET was early enough _not_ to have a C2N, but a re-badged
Japanese deck.)
WHen I got my first PET, I ahve a 8050 disk unit, but no cassette unit. I
also had a few programs on cassette. There had been many circuits in
magazines over the years to link a normal audio tape recorder ot a CBM
machine, but all of them kludges the 'deck key pressed' signal. On the
genuine Commodore drive this came from a leaf swtich on the mechanism.
The magazine projects either used a separte switch or required you to fit
a microswitch or simialr to your audio recorder.
I looked at the scheamtics for my Radio Shack CCR82, and noticed
something very handy. The appropritate4 bit of the circout was soemthing
like :
/
/
Bat +ve -----o o------------------o o-------------- +ve feed to motor, etc
Deck On/Of Remote socket
swithc
Obviosuly I could add a relay, driven by the 'Motoe supply' signal from
the PET with the contacts wired to the remote socket, and thus allow the
PET to control the motor. But also, a simple transistor buffer driven
from the (i nthe abov diagra) left side of the remote
socket would signal
when the Deck On/Off swithc (operated by the deck operating
keys, as
required) was on. So I could use an unmodifed recorder and get all the
applicaable functions.
Note that the switch, whether the origianl Commodre one or my hack,
doesn't indicate _which_ keys are down. So if you save a program and
press the play key (only), it will appear to work, but obviosuly doesn't
actually save anything.
