There was also a subtle difference in the feed hole location. On most form=
ats. the center of the feed hole lined up with the center of the data holes=
. On a few older computers, the leading edge of the feed hole alisned with=
the leading edge of the data holes.
I've only ever seen the leading edge of the hole aligned on the 6-level
typesetter tape. Was there really am 8-level (say) computer punch that
used it?
The reason was related to whether the sensors were mechanical or electronic=
I have a mixture of fully mechancial readers (like the Model 33 ASR
Teletpye), optical hole sensors with sprocket feed (like the DEC PC04)
and fully optical (data nd sprocke holes) with pinch roller/capstan
feed (like the Trend UDR700). All of them are designed to read tape with
the centre line of the holes (data and sprocket) aligned.All of them do,
indeed, read that sort of tape correctly.
