That was using a 3" scope tube to "write" to film, and then after developing, to read it back again. I vaguely recall "flying spot scanner" being somewhat related to this, I think there was some equipment out there that'd actually take a 35mm slide. Though I'd envisioned a roll of film, driven by a stepper motor.
