They used a connector similar to the DIN41612 in the HP 1000 and I can say
for a fact that we never had dirty or corroded connectors.

Yes, ... AND ... the "nasty plastic thingies" (DIN41612 connectors) are
denser,
gas-tight, and an order of magnitude more reliable than edge connectors.
