What's the secret trick to pulling off the front panel of an IBM RS/6000
type 7012 so that the devices in the front drive bays can be removed?

Assuming you got the top cover off, and the key is in the Service
position (or fixed), look for a black pressed-steel lever at the top
front of each
side. Pull 'em up & toward you.

That 3CT is a *very* nice machine. What really makes me drool is the
44P/270 with my name on it (literally) at this scrapper's place.

Processor-for-processor, there are quite a few machines that can easily
outclass an S/390 G1, but the I/O bandwidth is a different story.

retaining clip on it.
Behind the media bays I can see.. nothing. It's magic.
And the damned front still won't come off.

Actually, Doc wins the biscuit on this one for sending the following URL:

As it turns out there is a metal piece which I mistook for being
stationary, on the memory-board side. Pull it up, and the front cover
hinges on the opposite short edge (by the media bays), rather than the
bottom.
The plastic tabs and black retaining clips are both nothing more than red
herrings. I knew it coudln't be as hard as I had been making it!
