I am rebuilding the RTTY station I had as a teenager and I am trying
to get my hands on an ASR-33 Teletype. Even though they built some
600,000+ machines, I am finding it quite difficult to track one
down. I am looking for a machine with EXCELLENT cosmetics - it does
not need to work - that can be fixed. For a machine in excellent
condition, I would be willing to pay a king's ransom. So...if you
know anyone who might have a machine that is in need of being
utilized, please let me know, it would be greatly appreicated. --dave

I thought that RTTY used Murray code (e.g. ASR-32) not ASCII.
Or am I horribly out of date?

Sounds like your talking about PSK31(HF
narrow band sound card digital
mode), WSJT65(weak signal and EME),
FSK441 (Meteor scatter). There are about 20 more modes and rates of
signaling currently in use those were the top three.
Some of those do not directly transmit ASCII, WSJT65 is a good example,
So would HellSchribe.

Baudot was still the
standard then, ISTR. Most folks were using things like Model 28s.
I have an idea that at one time radio amateurs in the UK could only use
ITA2 (aka Murray, Baudot, although strictly it's not the same) by the
terms of the license. Nowadays 'Data' trasnmissions using ITA5 (ASCII)
are not uncommon, I think the only restriction now is that it can't be a
'secret code or cipher', which ASCII clearly isn't.

I also saw his posting on VCF. If he was just a little bit faster, like on the order of a
week or two, he could have snagged the ASR-33 I just bought on eBay. He mentioned on VCF
that he'd be willing to spend $1k-$2k on the right machine, and $1k happens to be what
that machine cost. I just received the final piece today; the seller broke it up into
three boxes for shipment, and built a crate around the main unit... part of the reason
that I was willing to bleed so heavily for this machine. And to think that I used to have
not one, but two ASR-33 units (one with a stand, one without), that I got for free and
gave away for free. Well, the new one has a chad box and the ones I used to have did not,
so maybe it'll hurt less if I think of it as a free Teletype and a $1k chad box?
Of course, if Mr. Tumey would like to offer me $2k for it, I will consider parting with
it! :)
Anyway, I will now take this opportunity to threadjack:
* The tape punch cover on my machine (the hinged piece with four clear buttons) has
broken/missing hinge tabs. I'll probably be able to fabricate some sort of repair
pieces, but I'd be interested in a good, clean, intact punch cover if one's
available.
* I'm having trouble finding 1" wide paper tape for my machine. It came with a
small bit of black paper tape, and I see a single expensive roll of dark-colored 1"
tape on eBay. I'd like to get a few rolls of plain old oiled paper tape in 1"
width with a 2" core. There are several listings for narrower tape on eBay, but
I'm not seeing the 1" width that I need. I'm looking forward to filling that
chad box...
* Last, but not least, I will naturally need a suitable computer such as a PDP-8 to go
with it! :)
I also have an incomplete ASR-33 that I got from the Guy Sotomayor extravaganza not long
ago. Once I figure out if I need any pieces of it for my new machine, I'll most likely
offer whatever is left as free-for-local-pickup. It's missing the tape punch cover
that I'm looking for, but there may be other bits of it that I'll need. Its
condition is right on the boundary where it could be considered a fixer-upper by somebody
modestly ambitious, but one wouldn't feel terribly guilty about stealing parts from
it, either.
