Well there's subtleties, but a combination of WHOIS and DIG
(or crap-ass nslookup).
The problem is 'virtual domains' --
eg.
www.fsdfsfdsdfsdfsdfsdf.com is just some user page on
BIGPROVIDER.COM there's no unified way to tell, but you can
usually figure out who's hosting them.
If a host has a DNS "A" record, then it's a physical machine,
and whois will tell you something. If you don't have a .*n[u,i]x
OS there are websites that do whois and dns lookups.
