I tried a long list of other rectifing materials:

    Galena,
    Carborundum
    Super-Blue blade and pencil
    CupricOxide
    selenium (from a rectifier)
    Silver oxides and sulphides
    Rusty nails

I'd read about these in various books as a kid.
