I've found enough of the data sheet (long story) to be able to say that the device in question (printer port -> ISA slot, in that direction) is the SMC34C60 (it was made by SMC, I remembered it correctly). I don't know if you can still get a data sheet (it was about 6 years ago I was looking at this), but it might be worth trying to hunt it down
