Hmm, my guess, this is a UK/US spelling thing.
Other words that come to mind are center/centre, program/programme,
and then all the verbs with z/s, like recognize/recognise.

Disk = floppy or hard disk
Disc - some people use it to describe a CD. Imagine it started with a
spelling error
