I'm looking for referrals to any decent shipping companies people here
have dealt with in the past. Preferably, ones who can deal with the
transportation of "obsolete" computer equipment within the continental
U.S. I've got a lead on a couple of moderate sized computer systems,
about 2.25ft x 4.20ft x 5ft in size, and probably around 800lbs each.
(The weight is just a guess.) I'd need door-to-door service on this
one. Someone who can pick them up at a loading dock, and wheel them
into a a garage for me on the other end.

Well, a general idea where they are located and where they are going to
might help. And if you want to start a discussion on the things to watch
out for in moving a particular bit of equipment, mention the brand and
model too.

It's still speculative at this point, and they don't meet the 10yr rule,

that are being taken out of service. I'd be shipping them from
Los Angeles to Indiana.

Brian,
I've used a "blanket wrap" service via Allied's agent
in British Columbia Canada (Tippet Richardson) to SF
Bay Area (VIP Transport). After the systems were
deinstalled TR went in, blanket wrapped the cabinets,
boxed up all cables, manuals, tapes, etc. then shipped
to Bay Area. I picked up at the bonded warehouse since
I had to deal with customs, but they could also
deliver. A couple notes - Tippet Richardson on the
Canadian end was great in arranging everything,
dealing with customs and getting stuff to CA in good
condition. This option is pretty expensive, but at the
time I had to move the equipment and had no other
choice - we had just moved into a new house and had a
new baby (in a 24-hour period, poor planning on our
part ;-). I didn;t even think about asking for a few
days to do a U-Haul run myself.
The Allied agent on the receiving end, VIP Transport,
was *completely* incompetent when it came to dealing
with customs and I had to personally escort them
through the process. I would never use Allied, at
least in the SF Bay Area again.
When you call around getting quotes the important
thing is to ask for a quote on "blanket wrapping
service" and avoid VIP Transport like the plague.
At the Computer History Museum we use North American's
high value services for any artifact shipping. The
move the big heavy delicate stuff and do a fantastic
job. The Museum moves a quantity and type of stuff
that most of us will never have to personally deal
with (e.g. Digital's historic computer collection) so
North American
I've also done the long-haul U-Haul thing which is OK.
U-Hauls are not really designed to carry VAXes, disk,s
tape drives, etc. and the ramps are often more trouble
than they are worth. I'm sure others on the list have
useful experiences they can share.
Others I have gotten quotes from:
www.freightcenter.com, Yellow (I've used them at work,
don't know if they do packing). Feel free to email

In terms of shipping company, someone mentioned BAX in the
past. I never shipped, I hauled. There Penske is you deal.
But you don't have time for DIY hauls, do you?

Although they are not door to door, ForwardAir has probably the cheapest
shipping rates for large things, typically around $0.25/lb. The drawback
is that you must deliver the item to one of their regional terminals
(usually located near major airports) and retrieve it from the same.
If you can find local delivery companies to do the short haul work, it may
save you some money.

I often move obsolete equipment for people - old radio things and old
computer things. I can not move huge amounts of stuff, but my van can
easily hold one six foot rack (and change), and the trailer can hold two
six foot racks (caccooned in plastic). I can also provide door to door
service, and help with loading and unloading. Quite a few satisfied
customers. Reasonable rates, too.
The deal is that I really only make deliveries on my way to or from
somewhere I am going - maybe with a little detouring. For example, I make
a Chicago-New York run about seven times a year, so making a pickup in
Pittsburg and a dropoff in Fort Wayne would not be a problem at all. ST.
Louis would not be too bad of a detour. Also, I m always going out to the
Providence and Boston area, so pickups and dropoffs can happen there. The
other deal is that things pretty much work on my schedule, although I am
flexible. Basically, hauling gets planned around trips - not trips being
planned around hauling.
I am seriously toying with a cross country trip this May - New
York-California. The only way I can manage it is to do some hauling to
pay for the gas and such. Hauling radio and computer things could make it
possible.
