Subject: Re: Unholy smoke
When you don't smoke, and seriously avoid second
hand smoke, your tolerance
for smoke smell gets very very low.
True.
What I have noticed in the past is that the entry point of the smoke
catches a LOT of the stink, but the power supply is almost a filter trap. I
I have worked on these Mac like that. I thought fan blows in or out?
I was afraid to really douse the motherboard, so I wiped it down with a
cloth dampened in window cleaner, then used an air duster on it. The floppy
Don't be scared. I have did dousing and literally bathed the
motherboards and HOT water & dishwasher soap or strong dose of
real TSP in past then 2 or 3 rinsings then final rinse with
distilled water! Came out fine after final risne with 1 gal of
distilled water then speed dry it in oven on real LOW temp with door
ajar for 20mins or so. ANY removeable IC's has to pulled anyway
before this bathing task. Medium stiff flat top round brush one
small and one large. Brush firm like u are brushing fruits.
One odd story:
Owner was vastly relieved when model 30 machine revived after bathing
to remove mouse pee and BM strains and closed that open slot with a
blanking bracket slot. Fact: mouse passes thru 1/4" dia openings.
What is successful is that provided that u have enough block of time
and all materials at hand before going into that bath route.
In old days, I would use freon. Dirt literally floated off with
a generous spray and allowed to drip off onto floor. None came close
to that "new look" condition with anything else that simple.
Common dirt traps from my experience:
Any drives that has openings, all buttons, PSU, any fans and heatsink
with fans attached, confined openings and confined spaces, often
boards always get coated by gravity action and any cracks/gaps.
Even that small amounts, heat brings out stink worse.
Remember, NO WD40 period! and cleaning those drives needs to be
relubed again.
A tip to add to anybody's with smelly stuff after most of cleaning
done...
To ger rid of last remaining smell, hire out to ozone equipped shop
who specialize in smoke damage recovery to "burn" out the smell.
To find that ozone services, contact your insurace, firehall
or phone book specializing in smoke demage recovery about where they
hired out those kind of repair job for. Small scale job any small to
any handleable large objects is placed in closed container or plastic
bagged and ozone gas mixture pumped into container or bag for
minutes. At large size, a room is closed off and ozone gas let in.
I DID clean out a 9 pin printer from fire smoke damage. Like
cigarette smoke, that printer had to be in bits real throughly and
spend hours cleaning everthing inside and out.

PS: pet's doing peeings even over one month period on any floors
always requires complete floor down to joists tear out. That where
apts and all rental units both have NO PETS signs and few allows if u
have legal papers that pet is really well broken in trained and
certain amount of insurance amount required.
Here's why: That pet's pee smelly stuff can't be gotten out in any
means except cutting out all soaked bits then replaced with new
materials.
