To confirm: my PDP-8/L does indeed have those lamps. No sockets. They
are also present on the drawing in Maintenance Manual Volume II
(DEC-8/L-HR2A-D page 29).

After a couple of evenings spent tracking down a core memory problem, I
now have myPDP-8/L running (haven't yettested everything but it's been
 looking good so far.)
There are four bulbs out on the front panel which I have some spares
for, but while going through the replacement I noticed that only one
("CA") of the six "Major States"bulbs is actually installed
(therearen't
even sockets present for the other 5, doesn't look like they were ever
present). Is this typicalfor the 8/L?
I may install sockets for the other 5, because I'm pretty sure that more
 lights = better computer...

What's the power consumption of your -8?

The 8/L only draws a few 300W or so.
Also, regarding the lamps, I probably should have held off asking until
I disassembled the front panel -- I assumed the lamps were socketed
(like on the 8/e) but they're soldered directly in. Noting this, it's
pretty clear that in this machine's past, lamps were salvaged from the
Major States set to service more important ones that burned out elsewhere.
