Could I get some advice and pointers on the practice of interfacing old
payphones with modern equipment? In particular, I want to know about
turning a COCOT (which seems to be the easiest to find) into a telco phone
-- that is make it emit redbox tones when coins are deposited. I want to
experiment with that kind of phone with Asterisk.

Have you considered asking a telephone related
mailing list/newsgroup?
The Central Office group is full of very knowledgeable people who
actually worked with the telephone system first hand.

Local 2600 meeting:
*All meetings take place on the first Friday of the month (a * indicates
a meeting that's held on the first Thursday of the month). Unless
otherwise noted, 2600 meetings begin at 5 pm local time. *
Washington
Seattle: Washington State Convention Center. 2nd level, south side. 6 pm
Spokane: The Service Station, 9315 N Nevada (North Spokane).
If I recall your location correctly. There are probably people there
that have been there done that with anything COCOT.
