Have you ever tried comparing the speed of a built-in
floppy on a 68k Mac,
to a built in floppy on a PPC Mac? Like I said above, the speed difference
was extreme! Neither the PowerBook 540c (68040) or the PowerMac 8500/180
(PPC 604e) were using a USB floppy drive, they were using the built-in
drives that Apple sold them with. I've never really compared the speed of
the USB drive connected to the G4/450 AGP to the 8500/180, but as I recall
they felt about the same.
My 7300's floppy actually was quite a bit faster than my dual G4's USB
floppy (oh MAN is it slow), but both are definitely dwarfed by the
SuperDrive in my workstation IIci, which is so fast that I use it now
routinely as a disk imaging station (DiskCopy and a nice big hard disk :).
