I've got 16 SGI Indigo R3K SIMMs, free if you pay shipping. First come,
first serve...
(for those of you waiting on shipments of drive sleds, etc, I should be
caught up completely this week)

Hey Bill,
I can use them. I just got my old Indigo running. It only has 16Mb or memory so even
32mb is a big increase. Do you have any drive sleds left?

Joe, I heard a while back that you can only have 1 set of 2M simms installed
in a Indigo R3000. Are you actually using that computer?

Actually, that ASIC mask bug affects the 4 MB SIMMs. You can have as many
banks of 2 MB SIMMs in an R3000 Indigo as you like, but only one bank of 4
MB SIMMs.

No, you're thinking of 4M SIMMs. You can only have one set of 4M SIMMs
installed, but you can fill the rest up with 2s or 8s..

Yeap! It has IRIX 4.0.5 on it. I just got it running again after the power supply died
so I'm still learning how to operate it. If I can get a couple of drive sleds I'm
going to put Linux on one so that I can swap and use either OS.

Linux doesent (and will never) support the Indigo R3K machines. There isnt
enough available hardware documentation to port any other OS to the box.
Thats why IRIX (up to 5.3) is the only thing you can run on them.

i've seen plan 9 (2nd edition) running on an r3k indigo before. i
couldn't get it to work on mine though...

Did you repair the PSU or did you swap in an other working PSU?
We had five R3k and one R4k Indigo at the Unix-AG. The PSUs died, only
one working is left. That is now in the R4k machine and I am afraid
about the day it will die and that this day will come soon. :-(

Jochen,
Exactly how did the power supplies in your Indigos die? My first one would power up
momentarily and then go into shut down. The other was even stranger, the CPU would power
up but then the power on diagnostics would report that the keyboard was bad or missing and
that there was no hard drive attached. I noticed that the hard drive never spun up so I
checked for 12 VDC at the drive connector and found that it was down to about 1.3VDC. I
traced it back to the small circuit board in the power supply. I then pulled that board
from the other supply and put it in the second supply and it worked. (Yeah, Yeah I know
all about testing with a dummy load, etc etc for all you arm chair critics out there!)
Indigos seems to have a real problem with power supplies. Does anyone know why? The
next time that mine dies I think I'm going to check on replacing it with a power
supply from a PC or some of the Lambda switching power supplies that I've been
scavanging from old test equipment or ???.
Does anyone kow if there are any special requirements for the Indigo power supplies? Do
the voltages have to be applied in a certain sequence? Is over current protection
*required* and if so on which power lines and at what current?

1. I am located in Germany...
2. This where R3k machines with 16MB of that 4MB RAMs... and dumb LC1
(?) frame buffer. Not really usefull. So we gave them to a local
collector who has them in storage.
