Hi Marty,
I have one of the double-density models and can provide you with
copies of docs and some software. I have a bunch of application
software but it's in quad-density format for the Advantage and I
haven't bothered to transfer any of it to the Horizon.
The Horizon is a terrific, solid machine. The first serial port
is for the console and the second port is available for a printer,
etc. Both are easily reconfigured via the USER.ASM code (at least
my Lifeboat CP/M version). Two parallel ports are also available
on the motherboard.
I'm not sure if the Horizon bus is fully IEEE-696 compliant. Tim or
Allison?
BTW, California Digital (www.cadigital.com) sells hard-sectored
disks for around $10/box. They also have 8" SSDD floppies (ran
out of double-sided, unfortunately).

Since the difference between single sided, and double sided, is quite
often just whether or not it was tested and passed the test as double
sided, buy the SS disks, and try them.
There was a big discussion of this in the 'hobby' press many years ago.
What it boiled down to, was that nobody changed the 'stock material'
that was fed through the 'punch press' for making the floppies. It was
all a matter of what they needed to ship, as to how the stuff was
tested.

No, unlike 5.25", you can't just use an
8" single-sided disk as a
double-sided. The sector detect hole is in a different place and a
double-sided drive will treat a single-sided disk as a single-sided
disk. You'd have to punch holes in the case, plus cover up the old
holes -- I'd suggest not using sticky tape.
Or of course modify the drive electronics to allow _you_ to control the
2-sided output. It's not hard to do on the SA850 series given the
schematics/service manual.
What is even more anoying is that you can't use a double-sided 8" floppy
in a single-sided drive. The index sensor is in the wrong place, you see.
And punching extra holes in a few boxes-worth of disks is not my idea of
a fun afternoon :-(.

Still not good as the hole in the jacket needs to be rather larger than
the hole in the disk itself.
