Anyway the
reason I am mailing is that I have just been given the
chance to take home a decomissioned Meiko CS2 from work.
Basically, the United States sucks.
Why is it that overseas decomissioned supercomputers (albeit a rather
small one in this instance) are easy to obtain, but trying to pry one out
of a stateside installation is basically impossible? The government, and
some rather outdated "security" issues have something to do with it.
Damn, I would drive half way across the continent to pick up an older
Cray, ETA, CM, KSR, Maspar, NEC, etc..
I haven't seen any excitement over the MassPar I told the list about
sitting in Irvine CA. I think the scrappers have the bidding up around $200
or so, and so far it is still complete with the dec workstation to run it.
