Hi Mike, thanks for the steer.
That manual is interesting but does not seem to contain any of the basic
operating procedure.
e.g. I guess that it is OK to power the drive down with a cartridge in
situ but
will
the drive attempt to spin up and load the heads if I
power it up?
Peter,
Head loading will only happen with a cartridge in place, removing the
cartridge will prevent the drive to spin-up.
Powering up a drive which have been in storage for several years without
doing a thorough cleaning session is not a good idea.
You should clean the drive internally and let it run without a head load
several times to be sure the disc spins up without too much 'wobble' and
give the system the change to blow some air through the disc chamber.
When testing my 7906's I removed the voice coil power to prevent a head
load.
I also modified the servo board a little to get a drive ready signal with
head load, so I could let the drive run for several hours to get the
bearings run in, and get lost of the jetfighter noise ;).
And it also let the drive blow away any particles remaining in the disc
chamber and on the disc.
I know the 7907 is from later years and more compact than the 7906 but I
hope it's of use for you.
