Is that true of an entire drive or just the directory?

How about some fancy DOS batch file programming and use of LHA (a
small compression program) to unpack and re-pack files only when
needed on the fly?

Didn't Stacker work with floppies as well as hard disks? ;-)

Yes, and it worked with RAM disks too. So if you wanted to compress a
lot of files up more-or-less instantly for sending somewhere, set up a
Stackered ramdisk, then pap the Stacker volume file over the wire...
