New subject: Two drives on a Emulex? How?
I've got a Emulex controller in my MicroVAX II, I'm trying to attach a
second hard drive to it, and got what looks to me the necessary cable
today. I think my problem is with the "Write Protect"/"Ready"
switches
thing. I've got one that is for the Emulex, the rest I've got are DEC, it
appears the controller can handle two drives, and I'm suspecting that in
order to it needs two of these switch things.
I tried pluging one of the DEC switches into the cable and it wouldn't
work, that's when I noticed the Emulex switch has a row of DIP switches on
it. Do I need to just flip some DIP switches, to add a second drive to the
controller, or what. If anyone can tell me what these switches mean I'd
appreciate it.

I've got a
Emulex controller in my MicroVAX II,
Which controller? Emulex made about 25 different
Q-bus controllers, not counting custom jobs... 1. Cable the drive properly. Note that most PC-clone
cables have
a twist in them; depending on the setup, this twist can either
cause things to break or operate strangely. What sort of cable?

What sort of drive?
DUB1: is an RD54
the drive I'm trying to use for DUB2: is a RD53 (it was working a 2 or 3
weeks ago)
What are the drive select jumpers on the
drives set for?
On Card:
SW1: 1 2 3 4
0 1 0 0
SW2: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0
On Switch Card:
SW1: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Where's the termination?

B. Run the diagnostics to format and verify the drive.
The drive should actually be good to go, I'd loaded a copy of VMS out to it
for another of my systems, but I need the extra space on the MV2, so I
wanted to attache it there. I thought this would be easier than figuring
out how to get the ESDI controller and drives working :^(
III.Configure your OS to use the drive.
Hmm. I should be able to simply mount it I would think. Is there
something else I need to do to access it? I'm not trying to get it
permantly accessable on mount.
But you haven't given us nearly enough information
for us to tell
you how to do 1, B, or III.
Hope this is better, but I'm doubting it. I wish I new what kind of
controller it was.

New subject: Two drives on a Emulex? How?
OK, I've got a little more info on this. I've put a RQDX3 back in the MV2
(it came with both controllers in), and now when I boot up I also see DUA0:
However, I'm getting the following error:
%MOUNT-F-MEDOFL, medium is offline
I've now got the RD53 plugged into the bottom of a RQDX distribution card.
Any ideas based on this info?
Personally I'm starting to suspect the drive has gone bad on me, in the
last 2 or 3 weeks.

This certainly seems likely - RD53's are not
considered to be the
most reliable drives in the world. Have you tried reformatting?
Unreliable is an understatement. That appears to be the problem. I just
attached a second RD53 to the RQDX3, and finally found the command to
initialize the disk. I was able to initialize the second one, but not the
one I've been trying to work with. Bleep. I won't say how much time I've
wasted on a "Good" hard drive.
Oh, well, now to figure out how to FTP the data I'm trying to get onto the
new HD (yes, I've installed TCP/IP on it).
