Each whole is "half a billionth of an inch" in diameter. The storage density is purported to be 25 times that of current hard disk technology (200 CD ROMs on a stamp). This is amazing. I see this as one of the most significant inventions of the modern (i.e. < 10 years) computer age because it represents a high-density, long term storage media that can be reliably used for non-volatile archival data storage.
