My Mom keeps an ancient iBook around specifically to drive a scanner.
While it won't help with the SCSI issue, take a look at
http://www.hamrick.com/ I *HIGHLY* recommend it for driving old
scanners. It made the Nikon CoolScan IV ED I have useful, and keeps
my Epson 2450 running.
I've been threatening to revive either my PowerMac 8500/180 or G4/450
specifically to be able to run ClarisDraw and the Mac version of
Master of Orion. Though really I should figure out how get both
running under an emulator on my Mac Pro (I already have the PC
version of Dawn of War with all the expansions running that way).

I keep an HP LaserJet 5MP running for the same reason. Though a
networking issue with the WiFi segment of the home network is keeping
my wife from being able to print.

For me this is the classification my Commodore 64 falls into, out of
all my old 8-bit stuff, it's the one that actually gets used. While
back in the early 80's I had a VIC-20, I prefer my souped up C-64.
:-) Same with the VAX, but I've always used my Alpha's running
OpenVMS to get stuff done.
