Since the issue came up recently, I requested a price quote
from Athana. I told them it's a joint order with
friends
for 100 pieces. And this is what I got back:
Per our telephone conversation of this date, Athana is please
to send you the following quotation, for 5.25" and 8 inch
diskettes, based on a combined quantity of 100 diskettes.
5.25" DD diskettes 8 Inch Diskettes (SS or DD diskettes)
$0.85/diskette $7.50/diskette
Shipping charges to Indianapolis are $12.00 via UPS ground.
Now how does that sound, $7.50 per disk? Pretty stiff
price, and the difference to the 5.25" DDs is quite
interesting. Anyone found better prices?

I have some 5-1/4's on consignment on my web site for $15 per hundred plus
shipping.

IIRC, back in '78 or so, the 8" diskettes cost $10 each at retail. I don't
remember what box of 10 cost, though. I've found that "vintage" hardware
seems to top out at somewhere around the price it brought, new, back when it
was new, in places like eBay, so maybe that's an indicator of what folks will
ultimately pay.

I squirreled away some 8" SSDD floppies many years ago and
I may still be able to find them. I would charge no more than
half that price and probably less for a reasonable quantity - like
at least 50 if I still have that many?
If you all can total up your order, see how many you all want.
At first I used some an RX03 as DSDD media by punching
extra holes for the DS index location. Later I realized that
putting a DPDT switch into the detector circuit would fool the
RX03 drive into thinking that DS media were present when
only a SS media was there - saved punching the extra holes,
although obviously I still needed to do an LLF.
I also still have some 5 1/4" SSDD media as well.

other brands, purely with intent to pass them on to members of this list
for about $3 a box of 10 and shipping. Email me directly if interested and

It makes me sorry I dumped the approximately 1500 boxes (about 10 cu. yd.) of
8" floppies I discarded some years back. I desperately needed the space,
though. I've still got what's probably sufficient for my own use until about
10 years after I'm dead, though I'm not planning to discard any more.

I worked in television, and the Chyron RGU-2 character generator used
those buggers. Last two boxes were given to us. If it weren't for the
media, they'd still be a very useable item, if you were willing to work
on them yourself.
They were a neat app-specific box using AMD bit slice processors. They
might qualify for this list, as they are 20+ years old now. Lots of TTL
technonlogy, and 8" drives. If you are into video production.
