The idea behind that is only a single message would ever appear for
any given item ... he wouldn't need to tell the losers who won (they
could check on eBay), and the mechanics are handled by eBay.

Ebay has a check box when you submit a auction listing to make it private
auction (which I assume means you use the eBay hardware for bidding, but
your ad doesn't show up on eBay searches etc.).

No, it just means that the bidders' identities are not revealed.
That's so that when you bid on "adult" items, your cow-orkers won't
notice and make fun of you. Or something to that effect.
