That is possible. I worked on an HP9000/835 a few
years back (not my
machine, so I can't check any details now), and I remember that one of
the 'logic' boards had to be in place for the PSU to start up. And it
wasn't just a dummy load -- we tried that.
If that's the case I'll have
to connect the PSU to the computer
to test it :-(

Yesterday, I received an e-mail pointing me to a fellow on Long Island
who has offered us a very interesting donation.
It is a ModComp computer system. Apparently, a large ModComp computer as
it rests in half of a 40 foot storage trailer, plus some other bits, and
involves about 8 very large cabinets. It is the remains of the
computer and/orcontrol room from the Shoreham Nuclear plant. The unit is
about 26 years old.
Incredibly, the fellow is offering to deliver!
