I am very pleased to announce, and be done with, the scanning of a
small stack of CompuServe Magazine, the magazine sent to subscribers
of the online service of the same name. There are 19 issues in all,
various months from 1990, 91 and 92. They're full of ads for "The
Mall," CompuServe's online shopping service, with a good sampling of
the products of the times. The articles cover a wide range of topics
(and how they're accessible on their service) as well as predictions
of CompuServe's existence for decades to come. Not much mention of
this "Internet" thing...
Due to the size of the files and the ease of reading documents in
their browser, I uploaded the scans to archive.org instead of our
usual docs site. All of the issues should be accessible with this
search:

Is there a lot of interest in this sort of stuff? I have a bunch of old
MacUser and Macworld magazines (various issues, 1985 thru 1996 or so)
including a mint October 1985 MacUser issue 1, a bunch of old LisaTalk
Report magazines, and some Sun Remarketing catalogs. I would have more but
this is all I managed to save from my Dad's house-cleaning (AFAIK). Might
still be able to scrape up a few more next time I visit. Hope to find a few
more old MacUser/Macworld mags and a stack of mid-1990s Byte magazines I
collected as a young'un.
I suppose I could add some of these to my to-scan pile... we'll see what
the masses think. I enjoy thumbing through them.

Well I think there is - but I'm likely in the same "save it ALL" camp
as Jason Scott and the other archivists. Of course one must
prioritize projects so I went for one that was achievable (not too
many issues, low page count in each) as a first attempt at doing
magazine scans. Some didn't come out as nice as I would have liked
(badly cut edges, bleed-through, etc) but most are decent.
MacUser and Macworld magazines (various issues, 1985

The collection will lock into the main magazines collection soon (we have
scripts that step through and link things over the day.)
As mentioned, there's been an effort by myself and others to put as many
magazines of all sorts up on the archive, building on the work of hundreds
of people who've scanned in magazines and journals over the years. Right
now it's a little scattershot, but I've tried:

In terms of "I'd like to help" with the whole scanning thing, the real
important stuff is low-circulation newsletters or specific magazines that
you have copies of - for example, I have all the issues of the LaTeX
Journal, which isn't that major a magazine - scanning in BYTE or Compute!
at this point would not be a good use of time, although I can suggest some
places that might take your copies.
But anything people upload, I'll happily get into the collections. My hope
is to, of course, get everything ever.

There was a competitor in the 1970s called Computer Decisions, which
are extremely hard to find in the wild. I have a few years worth. In a
way, I like them a bit better than Datamation, as they had a monthly
data center photo shoot feature for a while. Pure porn.

Byte is mostly all scanned and online in a couple places.. some of the
others, not so much... very few complete sets anywhere.

1994), but I have one issue from when I _was_ a member, March 1986. I
should scan it and add it to the pile.

That would probably an interesting contrast. I was a member from 1983
until....when I got hooked on Commodore BBSes, I guess. Or when I
parents cancelled the sub :)

How about if I make a reply to thank you for reminding me that the vast
majority of my work is not arranging scans, organizing material, or
collecting information, but working to dissuade people that every single
vintage computer enthusiast is not necessarily an autistic spectrum-edge
semantic warrior?
How about me replying to say that this thread was about getting something
done, making the effort to scan history in and make it available to the
widest amount of people, only to be given the cherry on top of you doing
literally nothing for the planet?
How about you try to find another avenue supporting knowledge of this
still-untapped culture, beyond "I am 3000 years old and like to argue?"
Would these replies be adequate and permitted?

While I realize that 99.9% of everyone who uses the term "Windows" is
referring to certain current operating systems,
TSX-Plus had "Windows" support for multiple jobs which
used the same terminal on the PDP-11 well before 1986.
Of course, refreshing the screen using a serial terminal at
9600 baud could take one or two seconds and the method
was to use "<CTRL/W>n", but that does not distract from
the fact that TSX-Plus had full blown "Windows" support
far in advance of the PC systems.

the current "Windows" features. I simply wanted to correct
the record and that "Windows" support originated long before
1986 and probably with more than just TSX-Plus. If there
are any replies, please do so ONLY to mention any other
operating systems that supported "Windows" before 1986

The ETH Lilith had multiple, overlapping, multifont, graphic-capable windows in 1982.

Which was inspired by the Smalltalk environment on the Xerox Alto,
which had those features in 1976.
Though the Lilith was available for purchase, while the Alto generally was not.
