Thanks for the replies so far: I have condensed my responses thus:

You should also have at least one RL cable terminator, too!
Ah, yes. For once, I have tried to do all the obvious (to me)
things before asking for help... it was late last night when I
posted... I neglected to add:
The drive is terminated with a valid RL02 terminator.. I have
checked and rechecked the cable, and run it reversed (on both ends)
just for grins, and I have verified that the 'door closed' switch
mechanism is in fact sensing top down and pack cover installed on
top of the pack.
Small hint for those needing more RL11-ribbon-cable-to-RL02-round cable
adapters: you can make two of these from each busted RL02 drive you have!
Cool! Cue Johnny Carson Imitation: "I didn't know that...."
Bill suggested:
Been a long time, but it sounds to me like the
cable on the RL11
may be reversed at the transition block.
I, too, suspect a possible cabling problem.
I'd flip it. I don't think it does any
harm.
Other possibility is that the cable is open somewhere...
I can guarantee that it won't do any harm.
Indeed, I do my RL cabling
by such trial-and-error. (Same goes for Pertec formatted tape drive
cables... many edge connectors have a polarizing slot in them, but there
are several different standards for where the slot goes, making it
useless for folks like me with so many different makes and models of
Pertec formatted drives!)
And I would like to *personally* thank each and every individual who
specified key-less ambiguous connectors for thier design. Too bad
you can't be made to compensate for lost time/headaches/fireworks.
One other issue... check the round cable for bent
pins.
Done that. All fine.
I still think I'm at the point where I would like to speak with
someone who really knows these devices from having worked with/on
them... I can do just so much with installation manuals and printsets.
Cheers
John
