You need to give the module number (usually on the handle of the board).
It is a disk controller for MFM disks and a floppy drive. There was
an RQDX1, RQDX2, and RQDX3. Each supported diffferent models of hard
disks in the RD line.

I was lucky enough to find an RQDX3 for a fair price recently, however
it didn't come with the top cable. If someone could point me to where
there is ribbon construction information (where to split, where to place
the pin 1's etc.) that would be most useful, thanks.

Thanks a bunch. Looks like there's more work than just taking
the ribbon, splitting it in two and fitting two ends on it, as One
controller board (and only one) I've dealt with in the past did.
And, if anybody has a distribution panel they want to part with,
please let me know.

The I/O distribution panel sits just behind the drive bays. It is
accessible - as far as the cables are concerned for the drives -
from the drive bays. Since the BA23 has 2 * 5
1/4" full height
(old style full height - not PC full height), you can use an
RX50
(actually two 5 1/4" floppy drives) and an RD5n drive.
If you should happen to have a 6 button front panel (probably rare),
then you can use two RD5n drives. BUT, BE VERY careful in
setting up the jumpers for DS3 and DS4. If you make them the
same (both DS3), pe prepared to lose all data on BOTH drives.

looks like
on a BA23?
This isn't one, see below.

This is one of those 11/23's that look like it's in a little rollcage
(sim. MINC?)... it's called a DEC DataSystem, it's the one I
mentioned on list as being in a semi-sealed case. Don't ask me
yet if its Q/CD-or-Q22-or-? yet, I'm still learning Q busses.

I have done this with a 4 button panel and RQDX3. I attached two RD32's and ran
2.11BSD until one of the drives when flakey. It took a jumper or a pullup
resistor on the panel board to simulate the online and write protect buttons for
drive 1. If anyone wants the jumper description, let me know and I will pull out
the board and take a look.

I would not undertake to split a 50 pin cable into what the
RD5n drives require. But I might have a spare. Let me know

If it says "RDRX" on the board, then it's probably not a RQDX3. RQDX3s say
"RQDX3". RQDX1s do say "RDRX", so you may have one of those. I've
never seen
a RQDX2. Check the field guide for definitive information.

panel.
Is there a difference between the RQDX1/RQDX2 distribution panel and the RQDX3
panel? When I replaced the RQDX1 in my PDP-11/73 with an RQDX3, I lost the
floppy drive write protect lights.
