I have a chance to pick up an old Penril VCX-100. It
is supposedly a
serial port multiplexor to connect a bunch of terminals to a host.
I have a bunch of terminals and not enough ports on my host (Linux PC).
Can anyone tell me how to use this box?
The VCX100 comes either with a V.35 interface or a RS-232 composite
interface. On the other end of this interface is always another Penril
box which does the demultiplexing. So, no, by itself this Penril box
won't do you any good.
What would do you the most good is a DECServer 700 or some other TCP/IP
compatible terminal server. This you can throw onto your LAN quite easily.
Older DECServers (like the 200 and 300) can be put into service as well if
you want to go to the trouble of enabling MOP boot support and LAT in
your Linux box.

Hmmm.. that's kinda impossible for me because, things like DECServer 700
don't pop up too often...
Here's my situation in detail. I have a bunch of TRS-80s and assorted old
8-bit machines. I also have a network of Linux boxes (with some M$
machines thrown in). I want to run terminal programs on my TRS-80s and run
them off a Linux box I have set aside for hosting (I want to do pine and
etc). Problem: Not enough serial ports on my Linux boxes. What's the
best/cheapest way of doing this?
P.S. does anyone have copies of terminal programs for TRS-80 Mod I/III/4,
100, 1000, 2000, coco1, coco2, coco3, amiga 1000 or atari 800?

Probably to buy a cheap multiport serial card. Cyclades has some nice
unintelligent cards, as well as some nice (but quite spendy) intelligent
cards and terminal servers.
I have comms programs for the Amiga if you still need them (and if you
find one for the Atari 800 let me know because I need one ;) )
