Sorry to keep pestering the list. I have an idea...
Is there any really old original SGI hardware out there? I'm talking the
pre-MIPS stuff, that was used as a graphical front-end to VAXen and
other items (IRIS 1000) or even IRIS 2000 equipment.
Yes. I have an original IRIS 1400, serial # 0095, originally serial #
0047. The 1400 was the first SGI "workstation" that had a local hard drive
so it could boot on its own. The 1000 and 1200 had to netboot using
another computer. IRIS 2000 and 3000 series machines seem to be /much/
more common than the 1000 series.
At the time I obtained the 1400, I located two others via a Google search,
but neither of those were in functional condition. Mine is very very close
to being operational and could be up in running in less than a week if I
ever get the time to put into it (assuming I can unstick the head lock on
the Vertex v170 hard drive).
The label under the front panel with the 0095 serial number shows a
9/10 backplane cut, but it actually has a 11/12 cut. A second label
underneath shows the original serial number as 0047, which had a 11/12
backplane cut. I have no idea why the label doesn't match the backplane,
but the machine traveled the world (literally) so there is no telling who
all serviced it.
Images of the software tapes that came along with it can be found here:
