DIP 256K x 4 bit chips are found on ancient 256K (two chips), 512K (four chips) and 1M (eight chips) maybe 2MB (rare) from peecee video cards, usually found in ISA or VLB video cards. Also there's late models of 286 motherboards (1/3 baby AT) that still used sockets in groups of fours maybe plus two smaller socket for parity instead of simms. Make certain they're 20pin DIP ONLY. Don't take 120ns and up chips. Marked as -12 or -10 Too slow for laser I think. Cheers, Wizard

Hi Bill, In case you don't already know it, they're 4 x 256k bits and very few computers used them. Recently I needed about 180 44256s to fill out the memory in my HP viper cards. After some looking I found that some old VGA cards use them (particurly the Trident cards). I went to a surplus store that lots of PC cards and bought all of their cards that had socketed 44256s and got all the ICs that I needed. I got the cards for about $1.50 each. Some cards had four 44256s and some had eight (naturally I filled up on as many with eight as possible :-) I don't remember if the ICs were 44c256s or just 44256s or a mixture but it's worth checking on.
