I would think of more like 400V for a 3/4" arc.
It's about 60v once an arc is established and is almost
independant of arc length (10v at each contact and 40v
across the plasma)
Is it that the high wattage was ionising the
copper or otherwise altering makeup of the air gap?
It's the air being ionised.
