Didn't Seagate buy that part of CDC's disk
drive business?
Yes. CDC spun the division off as Imprimis, and Seagate bought it.
They (Seagate) said that they would use the acquired technology
to increase the reliability and performance of their drives, but
I was worried that they would bring the quality of the Imprimis
stuff down. On the whole, it looks like it was only a slight
dip in Imprimis quality, and a huge improvement in Seagate's. So
I guess it was one of the more successful mergers of high-tech
companies.
So many high-tech mergers prove to be collosal screw-ups (both
technically and financially) that it's usually hard to think of any
examples that weren't.
