It's time for another type-in BASIC program challenge! Are you ready
for BASIC Week 3: Under the Sea?
This time around instead of just being a picture or an animation, it's
a game! You take control of a sea turtle in a sort of endless runner
type game. The turtle constantly swims from left to right and the A &
Z keys move the turtle up & down. You need to eat food (x/y characters
in most versions) for points. Running into enemies will cost you
air. You can refill your air by catching air bubbles, or you can
surface to refill completely. When you run out of air it's game over
and the turtle goes belly up.
All you need is a vintage computer that can run BASIC. Like all the
BASIC Weeks before, if you've got a computer with BASIC in ROM you'll
only need a working computer and monitor. There's no requirement that
you save the program to tape or disk, just type it in and run it.

Its almost as much deciding which Basics are really Basics as it is deciding
which computers are Mainframes, Mid-Range or MiniComputers....
I also guess its ironic that Microsoft kind of started with Basic ....
And whilst the latest VB.Net isn't any more basic that C++ is C what about
Visual Basic for DOS was that "Basic". Going back further was QuickBasic a
Basic?

Decades after abandoning their progeny, Kurtz and Kemeny were SHOCKED, and
I mean SHOCKED, at what they saw in "street BASIC". HOW THE HELL could
they claim that they "never knew" what it had become??!? So, they tried
to force a return to their fundamentalist attitudes with "TRUE BASIC".
But, for the majority, Microsoft BASIC 4.5 defined BASIC. Even 5.0 was a
question. Then, a new generation grew up around TRS80, Applesoft,
Commodore, and eventually PC BASIC. Microsoft "owned" BASIC, and even
Gordon Eubank's CBASIC couldn't break in.
GW-BASIC was created as a substitute for the ROM requirement of MS/IBM
BASICA. Now, Microsoft claims that they "don't remember" what GW stood
for!! (It used to stand for "Gee Whiz".). They've even tried to suggest
that maybe it stood for "Gates, William"!
Yeah, the computer industry lost its sense of humor and stopped being fun
when companies such as "INTERGALACTIC DR", "Thinker-Toys" and
"Kentucky
Fried Computer" changed their names.

Can you call a compiler/interpreter that doesn't implement direct mode,
a "real" BASIC? It was pretty much always a feature of the original,
wasn't it?

But just because it has direct mode doesn't mean its Basic. I haven't tried the
very latest VB20xx but VB2008 has a direct mode window in the Visual Studio GUI.....
... and although I make fairly frequent use of it, it doesn't feel like Basic....

Heck, I still run GWBASIC in DOSEMU on 64-bit Linux. Works fine.
Mostly in the direct mode, however--better than a calculator for a lot

Heck, I still run GWBASIC in DOSEMU on 64-bit Linux. Works fine. Mostly in
the direct mode, however--better than a calculator for a lot of things.

Pick a BASIC! As long as you can get the program running, and it's a vintage computer,
it works. Right now there's ports for the Apple II, Amstrad, Atari 400/800, BBC Micro,
Commodore 64, Commodore 128 (with color graphics!), IBM PC, MSX, and TRS-80 CoCo 3. No-one
has provided a port to a CP/M BASIC. Yet.

I did find it interesting that the IBM ROM BASIC looks at the first 40 characters of
variable names, instead of 2 like almost every other Microsoft variant. Because of that I
started with that one this time so I could make easy to read variable names. I was
wondering if that might trip up anyone that did a port to a 2 letter version, but so far
they?ve all caught it and shortened the names and made sure they were unique.

Good luck. That BASIC was extremely limited. Only 26 numeric variables, one for each
letter? Only 2 strings? Only 1 numeric array? My program is using a lot of strings and
arrays.

As an aside, somewhere I have anelectronic typewriter that uses a wide
carriage version of that ALPS ballpoint pen plotter mechanism (you know,
the one that was normally about 4" wide and turned up in the Radio Sahck
CGP115, Commodore 1520, etc). Anyway, this thing is wide enough to take
ful lA4 paper.
It has a Centronics port, and accepts the normal commands for those
little printer/plotters. In typewriter mode there are facilities ot draw
bar charts, etc.
Anyway, why I mention it is that it origianlly came with 2 sets of pens
(now, alas all dried up). One was the normal black/blue/green/red set.
The ohether incldued black and red something else that I've forgottoen
and a 'pen' of tip-es like correction fluid 'paint'. This typewriter could
delete a character by plotting over it with said white pen.

I have a Model I as well. I don't hear that anyone is working on the TI-99/4A
version. It's definitely a different dialect of BASIC. Extended BASIC is better.

I'm not sure you can call it a comparison, but there is (was?) definately a
website that lists all the different languages and includes example code
too. I forget what it is called but when I last checked it a couple of years
back there were 500+ different programming languages (including all BASIC
and assembler variants).

I remember suffering through porting problems to (MS) CBM BASIC on the
4K PETs. Anything with MAT was a lot more work.

all-in-one computers with BASIC in ROM. But I can't see how it can run
this progrma (even if I add the optional String Variables, Extended I/O,
Advance Programming, etc ROMS). There is no way to sense a keypress, and
the display is a single-line upper case only one. It's an HP9830 of course.
Hang on though... An HP9830 + HP59405 HPIB interfce should eb able to
tlak to an HP1350 'Graphics Translator' That would give it a vector
display. Given you only need a couple of keys for input, perhaps a few
sense switched wired up to a parallel interface unit would do. Now tht
would be an interesting project, but not one that owuld take a week...

For display, it's driving a VT100 terminal emulator through a tortured path:
{9830 + homebuilt plug-in I/O interface} ==> {RPi} =ethernet=> {router}
=ethernet=> {Mac/VT100 emulator}
- The RPi here is effectively just acting as an I/O adapter, doing I/O to the 9830 on a
couple of GPIO pins
and running a program doing character relaying.
- The Mac is running Terminal in VT100 mode and ssh to the pi.
The homebuilt I/O interface for these purposes appears to the 9830 as a
'general-purpose' I/O device, so original HP devices that can do character I/O
should work instead.
For input, as Tony indicated, the native 9830 firmware doesn't allow for polling the
built-in keyboard, so it would not allow game play.
To get around this, a new function was written in assembly to extend BASIC to allow
polling the external terminal keyboard, so the above output path is essentially reversed.
(It might be possible to write an assembly function to poll the internal keyboard, it
would require linking into the firmware interrupt structures.)
The Extended I/O ROM (which I don't have) has a STAT function which should provide a
similar capability to the new polling function.
So, while it was accomplished with facilities and techniques on hand, it should be
possible to make it work with original HP 9830 extensions/options, together with a
terminal capable of cursor positioning.
However - as anyone who knows the 9830 could anticipate - it is far too slow.
A screen update cycle take ~ 3 seconds, and over 4 minutes for a complete traverse of the
screen.
For speed, could rewrite it in assembly, if more giggles were desired.

sense switched wired up to a parallel interface unit would do. Now tht
would be an interesting project, but not one that owuld take a week?
Is there no way to interface a terminal to it and have the BASIC send
its output to the terminal, and then read from the terminal? Then all
you?d need to do is send the right cursor codes.

Very impressive! The speed actually doesn't look much worse than some of the other
computers I was running it on. The only way to get it playable has been to compile the
code, seems like most of the BASIC interpreters are too slow.
I've posted it to reddit too.
