I think it's using sapphire as the substrate for the chip. ISTR, this is
done primarily in space applications where radiation hardening is
required.

Yes. That's why it went out on the Voyager probes. V'ger is descended

There are some 1802 varients that use SOS, but your every-day
1802 from RCA was not SOS.
