They might throw it out... the Salavation Army store near me does that. They sell computer parts (monitors, keyboards, software, printers, that kind of stuff), but all CPU's they throw out. They claim this is because too many people were buying them, and then bringing them back and expecting support or to return them when they didn't work (despite all the large "As Is, All Sales Final" signs everywhere).
