Anyone here interested in a PCI-based IBM P/390 board (Not E)? I've actually got two
that I'm not using, and a PARCA
bus-and-tag board, and think that some other hobbyists should have a chance to acquire
this stuff...

Yes, I'm interested. I have an MCA version (running) and a PCI P390/E
(not running).
I'd also consider trades...

You need specific models of machines for the card to be hosted. The
microcode for the system I think includes OS/2 It's been some time
since I loaded and ran the microcode on a cold machine.
There is also a way to run the cards hosted on an RS 6000 hosted by AIX.

requisite driver

I believe that the P/390 will run in S/370 mode and there are several
free OS's for S/370 around.
There are also a few options for real 390 code. There is a freely
downloadable copy of MUSIC and MTS was also recently released into the
public domain.
I would expect these to IPL on a P/390 but MTS might need tweaking for
printer support.
Older releases of zLinux should work.

I just dug into this a bit, as I noticed I wasn't remembering most of
the process. I unzipped the install package and looked through it a bit.
The R390 distribution contains drivers for AIX 4.1.1, 4.2.1, and
4.3.1. Sridhar and I used the latter to get it running under 4.3.3 (I
think) on an RS/6000 model 397. (a beautiful machine by itself!)

Dave knows this, I'm sure, but for the record, the AIX kernel was
completely rewritten between v5.0 and v5.1, and a *lot* of legacy
support was dropped. It's not surprising that the P/390 code won't run
in 5.1.
This begs the question "What about AIX 5?"
Trust me, just run 4.3.3. :)

The R/390 microchannel version of the card did work on 4.3.3. Had such a beast as work
machine 10 years ago.
Wish they let me buy the silly thing... But of course it had to go through 3rd party asset
disposal to a company didn't resell to the public. And that meant it was deemed too
old to commercially market so it was broken up for parts. Corporate policies are wonderful
things.
