Ok, I really should have pulled it apart and looked before now,
and feel absolutely idiotic. :)
The reason that the battery backup wasn't working in my '9000
is that there are no batteries. (that would prevent it from
properly functioning, I'm sure...) I assume that the previous
owner found the batteries to have gone bad, and simply decided
to remove them.
I'll be attempting to contact HP about getting replacements
soon. Meanwhile, does anyone know of any other sources
(including price if possible) for these batteries?

I could also be the batteries had corroded and needed to be
removed.
Also remember never left lead-acid batteries freeze.

Well, if you know what type it needs, I might be able to help you locate a
distributor. Do you have any photos of the battery holder/compartment and
connections? Does anyone else have one of these and know what type of
batteries it needs?

Don't feel bad ... the real idiots are the beancounter marketers at
HP ... they're the ones that decided not to bundle the battery into
every HP 9000 of that series. The *HP 3000* of the same series all
came with a battery, of course :)

Did you try to look up a price with the HP model
number for the battery that I gave you?
BTW, for fun, go to parts.hp.com ...
and this company thinks they can tell the world how to use the web?
partsurfer.hp.com says the battery is $37.
For more fun, with MSIE and text size (View : Text Size) set to "Larger",
look at the partsurfer.hp.com home page ... text on the right gets written
on top of the input fields.
