My newest baby arrived today. I was recently contacted by a kind
gentleman who was looking for a new home for some equipment. I was
offered a NeXTstation, NeXT printer, N4000A monitor (clear and bright),
SyQuest MO drive and a ton of software and documentation for free, just
pay shipping. It just arrived, all in original NeXT boxes with the
original invoice/packing slip from NeXT attached. The invoice is dated
1992 and shows a cost of $7995.00. It's now a second owner system. I
can't wait to get it home and unpack it!

Nice! I'm still waiting for a chance to get down south to pick up the boxed
NeXT stuff waiting for me, most likely once xmas is out of the way.

I've got three N4005 21" color monitors, three (now) good and bright
N4000A monitors. I just lost a 17" N4006 Trinitron. After a lot of
years, it finally got so dim it was totally unuseable. I wonder if it
would be possible to replace the tube in the Sony monitor?

a lot of the 3rd party trinatron's use borderline flybacks, and that's what
cause the dimness or lack of focus :( Sun did that with their fixed
frequency "19" inch monitors, they used a flyback that just barely met
specs so as it aged and got "weaker" you'd lose brightness and / or focus
:(

I've got three N4005 21" color monitors, three (now) good and bright
N4000A monitors. I just lost a 17" N4006 Trinitron. After a lot of

would be possible to replace the tube in the Sony monitor?
It's _possible_ (it must be, the CRT was origianlly a separate part), but
it might be a lot of work. You'd probably need to use the yoke from the
NeXT monitor (unless you were taking a CRT from the same model of
monitor), and thus you'd have to do all the convergence adjustments, etc.
However, it might not be the CRT. All sorts of things can cause a dim
picture. It's too late now, but when I get a working monitor, I record
the CRT electrode voltages (including the EHT on the final anode). If it
then goes dim, or out-of-focus, or... I can then re-measure all the
voltages to see if any of them are way off. If they're all 'right', then
it probabyl is the CRT, but if, say, the first anode (you'd call it g2)
voltage is way down, I know where to start investigating.

In principle, surely. But it depends on finding someone who still
makes/sells that tube.
I know someone (worked as a service tech for videogames and the like)
who tells me that such tubes can often be resurrected. I don't know
details; if you're interested I can ping him about it. (Actually, it
wouldn't surprise me if he's on the list...Claude? You there?)
