Folks,
I am going to be in San Francisco in a few weeks' time, but only for about a
day and half. I could spare 2 hours at CHM but is it worth dragging myself
up there on a Sunday when there are no working exhibits, and I will only
have two hours.

My wife and I quite enjoyed our visit, the day before VCFW. We spent more
like 6 hours on it, though.
Realistically, in two hours (or even 6), you won't have time to notice things
aren't actually running.
Heck, if you can get there for the PDP-1 demo, that is working, and will pretty
much sink your 2 hours. (It is awesome. The 1401 demo is nice, too, but not
as visually impressive.)

enjoying a weekend in Vancouver
but my son has taken a four-month placement at Berkley, so if I wanted to
see him I had to go south.

Yes, it is a shame that few machines are even assembled, no
less running, but STILL VERY much worth the trip.
They do have a 1401 that runs, but it is only fired up on
certain days. It was a TOTAL gas to see all this stuff,
including most of the machines I ever worked with, even if
just static displays. I saw a LINC, Bendix G15 and PDP-12,
as well as the first machine Seymour Cray built in his
garage, etching the boards with his own hands!
And that was at the Moffett Field site, it must be a LOT
better now!

You can easily spend two hours on the stationary exhibits.
Yes, they sometimes fire up a real 1401, but it is so much cleaner than
the one that I used to have access to, and the CHM one doesn't smell like
burnt oil.
