Anyone have an extra one of these ? Best would be one with simple power
requirements (like the later half height versions), but I'm just looking for
something I'll be able to hook up to a Kryoflux or some FDC that can handle
FM and MFM for imaging 8" diskettes for archival.
FYI: Unless there has been a recent breakthrough, the Kryoflux is IMHO not
well suited to archiving 8" diskettes. I bought one about a year ago with
high hopes, but ran into a number of cases where it was unable to read an
MFM diskette that all my "real" diskette controllers had no problems with
at all. In their defense, it was conceived primarily for archiving Amiga
diskettes, and that it handles quite well.
I went back and forth with their software developer several times, but he
seemed convinced that the flux patterns on the diskette were corrupted. I
more suspect that the Kryoflux software lacks the ability of a hardware
based phase-locked loop to compensate for timing jitter.
I don't know what it is with so-called "universal" readers like Catweasal,
Kryoflux and, yes, even DiscFerret. The software never seems to get to
the point where it's generally useful without a coding and debugging
adventure. I probably have $1000 total into the abovenamed devices and
still end up using ImageDisk for just about everything - largely because
it Just Works.
In particular, what the devil happened with DF? It looked like things were
going great guns for a while, then: Everything. Just. Stopped.
Unless you have a format that cannot be read with a WD style FDC (e.g.
Intel or DEC M2FM, GCR, hard-sector, etc) I suggest using ImageDisk.
