Too bad there is not a vintage PC forum.
If you mean a website style forum that then check out the link below
if you want to talk Pentium era.
As for hard drive capacity, I think 98SE had a weird limit of 128Gb.
Never pushed the memory high enough most machines in that era were
lucky to have over 128Mb.
I apologize to waiting so long to respond!
I started to run my W98SE system in 2002 after I upgraded my old
system from W95. Initially, I used 40 GB hard drives which failed
about 3 years ago and were replaced with 160 GB drives. HOWEVER,
as noted above, during the boot operation, the drives are noted as being
131,069 MB which is about three times as larger as the 40 MB drives
which I initially started with, so I am very pleased with the result - most
especially since the 160 MB drives (about 8 years later, of course) were
less expensive than the original 40 MB drives.
SO QUESTION: My assumption for the 128 GB limit in W98SE is
the FAT32 table or something similar. OR the limit may be in the BIOS.
BUT, is there any way to overcome the 128 GB limit and use the full
160 MB of the drive?
Stability seems to vary a lot depending on what
it's run on and the
quality of drivers / software provided.
My stability seems quite reasonable. But I only use the W98SE system
for e-mail and running Ersatz-11, the latter being 95% of the usage. I
avoid web sites almost completely. When I do so, I usually back up
my complete C: drive (using GHOST), copy the files I want (to or from
the internet site - often using an ftp site with Wget.exe to my F: drive),
then do a complete restore of the C: drive just in case. I also check
the number of files and directories whenever I boot to verify that I
have not picked up any extra files. I realize that a virus is usually
placed
in areas other than a file, but hopefully keeping track of strange files
does help a bit.
I checked the site. However, I don't see anything of much
interest. I mainly use my system to run Ersatz-11, so it
really looks like a VERY FAST PDP-11/93 running
RT-11 most of the time with about 12 VT100 terminals
sitting on my desk top.
