If so, I'd suspect it to be an acidic corrosion.
After cleaning with something like vinegar, following
with some baking soda might be a good idea before
the final washing. This should help neutralize any
remaining acid.
Now, this is where I'd put some of Sridhar's TMAH to good use. Probably
clean these things up in a jiffy. If you wanted high-quality restoration,
you could always brush-plate the pins with gold.
