I think there are plenty of equivalents today. Sparkfun, Adafruit,
Spare Time Gizmos, .... but just like Heathkit in its day was actually
reasonably current technology, today's hobbyist is going to be
programming FPGA's and ATmegas, and possibly baking SMT boards.
