VID = Vendor IDentification number, or??
FWIW, I don't know if Linux cares.. under Ubuntu 12.04 it just IDs it
as a
RTL 5370 and that's enough, apparently.
Brain fart--my post was for another cheap Chinese USB-ethernet
thingie. I do have the RALink Wifi widget also, which identifies
itself as
148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter
Which is correct.
But yes, VID = vendor ID and PID = product ID. You can have your very
own by ponying up 3 kilobucks to the USB registry people. Many Chinese
cheapie vendors simply borrow whatever VID comes to hand--or invent
their own.
But for a few bucks shipped, it's probably a small risk that you'll
wind up with something that only works under Windows.

I had a Cnet+ wireless B, maybe BG I bought from Amazon years ago when
it was hard to find linux compatibility. Worked out of the box. Gave it
away as Ubuntu and mint run my Dell Laptops wireless. About $8 at the time.
A good resource for Linux wireless:
