I believe it was RT-11 with special application code
for starting and
monitoring the 780. The 730 and 750 had minimal microcode and used a
tu58 to load the remainder or overlay existing ucode to patch it.

Nah, it was just a special stripped down loader that was written for the
11/780. It used RT11 disk format though.
The 11/790, er the 8600/8650 used full blown RT11 on the disks, though.
I ran RT11 games on the T11 once during installation of a machine.
