Supnik did that in SIMH with his extensions to .tap
Of course, no one bothered to put a version or magic number in .tap images. I had argued
to put a trailer record
with more information after the physical EOF record that was added, but was ignored.
There is also .tpc which only has a 16 bit record length at the front, and AWSTAPE that
the IBM guys use.
