I've heard
that, though I've also heard they were more reliable (9v HMOS II instead of 12v NMOS
dissipating less heat...) I certainly know a lot of chiptune artists prefer the older
6581 to the newer 8580. If you're into chiptunes, this site has MP3s of recordings of
thousands of tunes, each running on two revisions of the 6581 and also the 8580 for
comparison.
