Unfortunately, it won't. Some later mechanisms might handle them okay, but
older drives and mechs don't have the write signal strength to properly
operate with denser media. Upshot is, they write unreliably. I have this
problem with my 1581 disk drive.

This is also true with the Atari STs as I found out to my dismay 4-5 years ago
when I lost some valuable data I thought I had backed up, even tho it had
seemingly written OK to the disks. I have a stash of 720s that I got at a
sell-off price from a surplus electronics store. Altho you can still get them
the local suppliers charge more for them than the HD ones.
